Holy Moly - What A Week

Hi Friends,

What a week. This week really captured the crazy ups and downs of our world. We'll share some of the more sobering news with you first and end on a lighter note.

One of our bakers and photographer, Ari was attacked on Friday afternoon last week in Oakland and had their car stolen. If you are able to, please consider contributing to Ari's GoFundMe to show Ari that the community has their back, get Ari a new car (and so Ari can continue to come to work and make these yummy pastries). Thank you so much if you have already contributed as we've already met Ari's goal in the weekend alone!

We spoke with Jeffrey Edalatpour of the East Bay Express this past week to discuss some of our "Franco Sino Magic" which you can read more about Bake Sum here.

Lastly, we're trialing a new San Francisco location with our friends at Golden Goat Coffee in the SOMA neighborhood on Friday afternoons. They make amazing coffee and their team exudes so much joy and excitement about everything they do. You'll see options for a Friday SF pick up on our website which will take place at Golden Goat. Let us know what you think!

Not able to snag a box on our website? Here are some other options:

Each pastry box includes:

Chocolate Banana Croissant: Filled with a roasted banana cream, Valrhona chocolate, fresh bananas, an almond cookie top, and dusted with cocoa powder and banana sugar.

Pineapple Bun: Fluffy milk bread filled with our pineapple custard and topped with a crunchy, yellow concha inspired top.

Green Onion Croissant: "A barely contained bouffant of golden pastry that is remarkable not just for its airy interior — green flecks of scallion trapped in the web of translucent dough" as described in the SF Chronicle. We layer in black and white sesame with a toasted sesame oil and green onions into our croissant dough and then bake until golden.

Okonomiyaki Danish: Inspired by the Japanese pancake, Okonomiyaki, this danish is topped with a veggie mornay and finished with Kewpie Mayonnaise, Okonomiyaki sauce, furikake, and bonito flakes.

Almond Cake: A decadent and rich cake that we recommend enjoying with some tea. It's topped with fresh walnuts that symbolize reunion this week in preparation for the lunar new year!

Mochi bites: Our mochi bites come in four flavors — Ube, Black Sesame, Blue Jasmine and Thai Tea. Inspired by Hawaiian butter mochi, they're crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and perfect for retoasting the next day too.

We encourage you to pick up early as anything not picked up at the end of the day will be donated. Please stay healthy, sane and safe out there. As always, share any thoughts, feedback or comments with us as we would love to hear them.

We hope to see you soon.

Made with love,

Joyce & the Bake Sum Team
